Empress Dowager Cixi ruled over China for about a half a century. She had a limitless greed for power, family and subjects. Indeed she had a sharp political sense and decisive practices but under her rule the Qing Dynasty grew more corrupt and lost its power.

The story of the Empress Dowager and the laster Emperor have been the subject of dozens of film Director Li Han Hsiang visited the topic numerous times, particularly with three high-profile films including 1975's The Empress Dowager which starred Ti Lung and Lisa Lu in the title role. A year before Lu would reprise her role in Bernardo Bertolucci's Oscar winning adaptation of The Laster Emperor (1987), Li directed Tonly Leung and Poon Hung in another film also entitled The Last Emperor (1986). Li's 1989 version of The Empress Dowager starring Liu Xiao Qing and Gong Li remains the most recent notable screen adaptation of the Empress's life.
